Work on your own schedule; earn more when you produce more.
A system that lets people pull tasks from any of the connected businesses, choosing their own qualifications and the work that suits them. If you want time off, you just don't claim any tasks — the system has to be able to heal from that, or it isn't really flexible.
Priority for the better tasks comes from demonstrated competency: showing up for the shifts you claim, good relationships with other staff, proven trust. Purely productivity-based ranking would make for a harsh environment. Merit becomes measurable task by task rather than depending on personal relationships — you don't have to be all-round perfect, and if you happen to be the best there is at one particular task, I want everyone else to make way for you.
Everyone should be able to try the work and see whether it fits before committing to the lifestyle.
